Review from environmental expert Dr Phil Johnstone
An incredible, disruptive, and beautiful book. Reading it felt like having your mind disassembled than gradually put together again through the kind of alchemy described in the making of these perfumes. I know not much about perfumes, but this does not matter one iota. The writing adeptly brings the realisation to the reader that this is not some elite domain accessible only to arrogant corporations, but something that is here, always present, for everyone, if we choose to turn on and tune in to the most neglected and primordial of senses. I particularly loved that angle concerning the instinctual nature of scents and the processes of sensing them that we have become estranged from. The book is a revolutionary call to awaken and reconnect. This is not some self-help bullshit either, but a radical, unapologetic distillation of a hidden art creating a new language and new world. It’s inspiring not just to those that dig the nose and scents, but creatives everywhere: don’t compromise…and follow your nose!
